Homemade Lemon Sweet Rolls

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 3 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 and 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 lemon

 

For the lemon filling:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest of 2 lemons
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 tsp Magnolia-Star Lemon Extract

 

For the lemon glaze:

  • 1 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp Magnolia-Star Lemon Extract
  • Zest of 1 lemon
Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, eggs, and lemon zest.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough is rising, prepare the lemon filling. In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, granulated sugar, lemon zest, and lemon juice until well combined.
  7. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Spread the lemon filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  9. Starting from the long side, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Slice the log into 12 equal-sized rolls.
  10. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover with a kitchen towel, and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  13. While the rolls are baking, prepare the lemon glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, fresh lemon juice, and lemon zest until smooth.
  14. Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly. Drizzle the lemon glaze over the warm rolls.
